High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) is a process of separating components in a liquid mixture. It is a form of column chromatography that pumps a sample mixture or analyte in a solvent (known as the mobile phase) at high pressure through a column with chromatographic packing material (stationary phase). Compared to other chromatographic techniques, such as TLC, HPLC is extremely quick and efficient. It uses a pump, rather than gravity, to force a liquid solvent through a solid adsorbent material, with different chemical components separating out as they move at different speeds.
