DBT-STAR COLLEGE SCHEME

The Star College Scheme was initiated by DBT in 2008 to support colleges and universities offering undergraduate education to improve science teaching across the country. This Scheme was launched for improving critical thinking and encouraging ‘hands on’ experimental science at undergraduate level in basic science subjects. On a larger perspective, the scheme was initiated envisioning that it shall encourage more students to take up higher education in science. Through this scheme the Department identifies colleges with potential for excellence and provides support for developing infrastructure for academics and laboratory activities. This support is in turn expected to invigorate teaching and provide unique exposure of students to experimental science. The scheme also acts as a catalyst in igniting young minds (faculty and students) to engage in networking, exposure visits to research institutes and industries and apply for research grants in order to prepare them for future challenges after the successful completion of their undergraduate courses. The American College, Madurai has received the DBT – Star college scheme from the year 2018-2019.

Outcome:

25 major laboratory equipments with its accessories and 21 minor instruments were purchased using DBT STAR college grants during the academic year 2018-2019.  Every year 200 students of undergraduate students have got benefitted for their routine practical classes and their minor projects. These equipments are utilized for the courses such as General Zoology, Molecular Biology, rDNA technology, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Entomology, Ecology and Biodiversity. Apart from undergraduate students, post graduates and research scholar were also benefitted for completing their dissertations.

Purpose of utility of equipments

  • Spectrophotometer – Used in biological chemistry labs for experiments like quantitative estimation of proteins, carbohydrates, plant pigments,etc.
  • UV-visible spectrophotometer – Used to quantify DNA and RNA
  • Dry bath: to dry DNA and RNA for PCR related experiments.
  • Micropipettes – Used mainly in molecular biology, rDNA technology and Biotechnology labs for all experiments to take reagents in micro quantities.
  • Soxhlet apparatus – for the quantification of Nitrogen in proteins.
  • Water and Soil analysis kit: To quantify the total dissolved salts, pH etc. in soil and water samples.
  • Flame photometer – to estimate the energy content of biological samples.
  • Autoclave – to sterilize laboratory glassware.
  • Microscopes – used in Cell biology, Microbiology and General Zoology labs to study the internal structure of cells, bacteria etc.
  • Refractometer – to determine the amount of sugar present in biological samples and food materials.
  • Light trap – used to trap insects for entomology labs and experiments.
  • Insect net – used to catch insects for entomology labs and experiments.
  • Plankton net – used to collect planktons from water bodies.
  • Minigel electrophoresis unit – to separate nucleic acids DNA and RNA
  • PAGE- vertical electrophoresis unit – to separate nucleic acids and proteins.
