About the city
Madurai is a major city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is the cultural capital of TamilNadu and the administrative headquarters of Madurai District, the third largest city in Tamil Nadu and 44th most populated city in India. Located on the banks of River Vaigai, Madurai has been a major settlement for two millennia. Madurai is closely associated with the Tamil language, and the third Tamil Sangam, a major congregation of Tamil scholars said to have been held in the city. Madurai is an important industrial and educational hub in South Tamil Nadu. The city is home for various automobile, rubber, chemical and granite manufacturing industries.IT industry is a major contributor to the economy of the city. Madurai houses various multinational corporations with two IT-Special Economic Zones (SEZ’s).
About the Institution
Main campus
Our college is Known for its academic excellence and social relevance. Its pioneering role in the development of college autonomy in India in 1978 and successful early implementation of the Choice Based Credit System under autonomy and its completion of 140 years of services bear testimony to the position that the college currently enjoys. Originally founded by the American Missionaries in 1841, The American College grew into a collegiate department in 1881 at Pasumalai by the initiatives taken by Rev. G. T Washburn, the Founder Principal of the college In the year 1906, the college was shifted to the present campus during the time of the second Principal Rev. W. M. Zumbro. The college became independent of the mission in 1934 when an autonomous Governing council was formed to manage its own affairs. Earlier, it was affiliated to the University of Madras and later, it came under the jurisdiction of Madurai Kamaraj University, Madurai.
Satellite Campus
The Satellite Campus of the American College is located 15 Kms away from Madurai in the natham highway at Chatrapatti. The 60-acre campus has been developed at the foothills of a small hillock which is a part of the Alagar Hills on the Western Ghats. The campus has been developed in egocentric and environment friendly way in order not to disturb the rich flora and fauna found in and around the campus. The serene atmosphere of the campus is enhanced by the abundant native trees and shrubs. The campus has been designed on the concept of sustainable development with more eco-friendly initiatives planned for the future.
About the Department
The American College is the first institution in this region to introduce Computers and Computer laboratory in education even in the early seventies. The College started teaching Computer Courses with the advent of Apple Plus II Computers, imported from the United States even before autonomy was introduced in the college. With the grant of autonomy to the college, several application-oriented courses were started. B.Sc., Computer Science programme was started in the year 1993. Then in the year 1994 Master of Computer Applications was introduced. Additional undergraduate courses, Bachelor of Computer Applications and Information Technology were introduced in the year 2007 and 2015. B.Sc., Computer Science in Satellite Campus was introduced in the year 2019. Bachelor of Computer Applications in Satellite Campus was introduced in the year 2020. B.Sc., Data Science and M.sc Data Science were introduced in the year 2020.
