The history of the Department of English begins along with the inception of the college, since the study of the English language was mandatory for students of all degree programmes. The Department started the undergraduate degree programme in English Language and Literature in 1968 owing to popular demand. The postgraduate programme was started in the year 1980 to mark the centenary of the college. The department became a research centre in 1994. M.Phil programme in English was introduced in the year 2005.
Dr.M.Davamani Christober, Principal & Secretary receives the Award for the best Arts and Science College in TamilNadu from Dr.Tamilisai Soundararajan, Governor of Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Pondicherry.
